Here's the third question I forgot:

3. What time do you set your alarm clock for a typical workday? The reason I ask is this: in movies and TV shows, I see people with first shift jobs setting their alarms for 8 a.m. and I'm always thinking, "Seriously? 8 a.m.? You're a police chief and your alarm goes off at 8 a.m.?" I'd be willing to bet that most people on my FL- excluding those with 2nd or 3rd shift jobs- set their alarms for somewhere between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Ours is set for 6:08 a.m. on weekdays, but if we're skipping the gym, we sometimes sleep in until about 6:40...

Not everyone who works "first shift" actually starts at 8:00.

You know the 80's Dolly Parton song, 9 to 5?

FTR: I usually crawl out of bed between 6 and 7, depending on whether I'm riding the bus or driving, and how many times I hit the snooze.

I never said first shift starts at 8 a.m. I am defining first shift as starting anywhere between 7 a.m. and about 9:30 a.m. I am just surprised that anyone who starts work at 9 a.m. would get up at 8 a.m. I need way more time than that to get ready unless I've done a lot of pre-planning the night before. I know some people who have commutes of 1 to 1.5 hours, too, so getting up at 8 a.m. for a 9 a.m. start time is definitely not feasible.

Part of it, I think, is working in a casual office. I wear jeans and dressy tees to work, if I decide not to "do" my hair no one blinks if its still damp when I get here, and I often don't do my makeup until I get here.

If I worked in a more professional setting I might have to get up at 7:30, but I can't imagine getting up much before that. I am actively dreading next school year when Britt has to be out the door even earlier, because I'm already frustrated that I have to get up a full hour before I 'need' to now to make sure she gets to school on time.

I start work at nine and tend to only be out of bed at half eight. But I'm literally two minutes' walk away from work and I can dress casual.
