I know they're trying to be nice, but. . . ugh.

Enforced socializing with my co-workers. Two dozen chattering women in a small, echoing space. Soggy sandwiches.

The owner of the company rewarded us for a record quarter by ordering in sub sandwiches from one of our clients and allowing us to take off a paid hour for lunch. We were strongly encouraged to sit with and chat with our co-workers. I like many of my co-workers, but I hate being forced to socialize when I don’t feel like it, with people I wouldn't choose to socialize with. I sat eating my sandwich filled with soggy pink tomatoes and limp gray mushrooms and listened to three co-workers talk about baseball for five excruciating minutes, and that's all I could take. I went back to my cubicle to check my email, and then I hid out in the bathroom until everyone went back to work.

Yeah, I'm a Scrooge that way, I guess.

I do that all the time, go and hide till the "socializing" is over.

Are you sure that was a reward? That sounds more like a punishment to me. You handled it better than I would have. Forced eating/socializing with coworkers was always a nightmare for me.
