I believe the character of math prodigy (and later professor) Amita Ramanujan was named in honor of the self-taught mathematical genius Srinivas Ramanujan.

Very coincidental. This is about the sixth reference to Srinivas Ramanujan I have read today. One was while looking up a math thing for the GRE, another was on Rob Brezney's site, another was on the Daily Grail. Apparently, he beleived that the Goddess Namagiri, would whisper formulas to him in his sleep. He then had to wake up, and try to solve or prove the formula.

Pretty cool.

And yes, Amita kicks ass.
