"Surreal Lives: The Surrealists 1917-1945 by Ruth Brandon. This book provides context for the Surrealist movement and the Dada movement before it. I think the fact that it was written by a woman gives it a different perspective than other books on this period, too.

and

"When We Were Orphans" by Kazuo Ishiguro. This book centers around a British boy whose parents disappeared while they were living in Shanghai, presumed the victim of kidnappers. The boy, Christopher, grows up to bcome a famous detective and determines to go back to Shanghai and solve the mystery of his parents' disappearance. The writing had a very dreamlike quality that made me want to keep reading and reading. I have to read more by this author soon.

Read my full comments on both books here.
