"Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy. As installments via dailylit.com, this took a LONG time to read. I tried it once as a teen and abandoned it after getting lost in the long cast of characters. This time around, I found it much more readable, though not my favorite of the "classics."

and

"The Forever War" by Joe Haldeman. I really liked this a lot better than I expected. It's only nominally about war; it's really about how the effects of time dilation as a result of extreme space travel would affect a person and his relationship to his society/culture. Recommended!

My full comments on both books here.

Yeah, I really liked Forever War. There's a sequel, but I didn't bother with it because the story in the original book was very self-contained. It didn't need any follow-up.

Have You read Heinline's Starship Troopers? That IS about war, but it is worth reading in conjunction with Forever War because Forever War is kind of a response to it.
