"Heart of Gold" by Sharon Shinn. Kind of a romance novel tinged with adventure, but in a sci-fi setting.

and

"In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote. A "non-fiction novel" is a perfect description. I envy his way with words. Amazing.

I thought the way Shinn shoe-horned exposition about how the society worked into the pauses in the action (on the train, while cooped up in the suite together) was kind of amateurish, but it was enjoyable overall.

You shouldn't really be reading Sharon Shinn looking for feats in literary excellence... she's a romp. She's fun and sexy, but her stylistics are trite. I enjoyed it, for what it was... a science fiction version of a tawdry romance. Read too much of her stuff in a row and you will get bored, it's pretty much all the same.
