"2001: A Space Odyssey" by Arthur C. Clarke. I thought the forward explaining how the book and movie script were collaboratively created with Kubrick pretty much simultaneously was pretty interesting. However, this is one very rare case where I feel the film was better than the book. I like Clarke's writing style enough that I will probably seek out other books by him, just not in this same universe/series.

and

"The Crystal Ship" a collection of three science fiction novellas by women authors: Vonda McIntyre, Marta Randall and Joan Vinge. I loved all three stories very much but thought the foreward by Robert Silverberg was eminently skip-able...
