April 9- April 15
Total days active: 5 out of 7
Total days did full body stretch: 2 out of 7
Comments on activity and stretching: Yeah- obviously a big fail with the regular stretching. It's been a bad week for exercise in general. I take back what I said in my last activity update about more intense workouts not making me any more sore than moderate sessions. The last week or two, the amount of pain I've been in while in bed is directly related to how hard I worked out the previous day. If I work out intensely, even if I stretch really well, I'm achy the next morning and don't get restful sleep after about 5 a.m.* Argh.
I know what exercises aggravate it and which ones don't. I'm thinking I'm going to take a break from the elliptical and treadmill and am going to do maybe a little light walking, yoga, weights and some swimming and be more vigilant about the stretching. I may also work up a self-made physical therapy regimen for trochateric bursitis. I already know the right stretches specifically for the condition, but I want to work on greater flexibility in my lower back/glutes, inner upper thigh, too, as that may be contributing.
I may have to do some intensive medication therapy, too, with ibuprofen. If I can't fix this on my own, I may ask the doctor if corticosteroid injection would be appropriate in my case. This is really affecting my quality of life, and I do NOT want to let this make me sedentary. I have too much biking and walking I want to do this summer!
*Interestingly, this profile from MedScape is right in line with my experience, especially the radiating pain and the sleep disturbance (though luckily not the weak feeling):

*Interestingly, this profile from MedScape is right in line with my experience, especially the radiating pain and the sleep disturbance (though luckily not the weak feeling):
- The classic symptom is pain at the greater trochanteric region of the lateral hip.
- Pain may radiate down the lateral aspect of the ipsilateral thigh; however, it should not radiate all the way into the foot.
- The symptoms are made worse when the patient lies on the affected bursa (that is, when lying in the lateral decubitus position). The pain may awaken the patient at night.
- Hip movements (internal and external rotation), walking, running, weight bearing, and other strenuous activities can exacerbate the symptoms. Patients may report that the pain limits their strength and makes their legs feel weak.
