What I've been reading
Oct. 1st, 2012 05:17 pm"The Accidental Time Machine" by Joe Haldeman. This is hard science fiction up to a point, but most if not all time travel tales have some places where it devolves into mad science, and that was the case here. I would have loved to have seen more from several of the times the main character traveled to, but I think the author intended more of a light-hearted romp with some spec fic elements than a heavy examination of the implications of time travel. A fun read.
and
"A Discovery of Witches" by Deborah Harkness. I only read this because it was given to me as a gift. It's the first in a projected trilogy of books, set in a universe where demons, witches and vampires are real. This had promise, but it had a few major flaws for me; the worst was that it feels VERY much like the set-up for a trilogy and the last one-fifth or so of the book felt anti-climactic and like a set up for the second book. It wasn't terrible, but I can't recommend this book.
My full comments on both books here.
