sarahmichigan: (cooking)
Last night, I tried a new recipe for Bollywood Night at our house, from Lord Krishna's Cuisine: The Art of Indian Cooking. It was a really simple mashed sweet potato with tomatoes recipe, and I think it's a keeper. I had to deviate a little from the recipe to work with what I had on hand, i.e. using canned tomatoes instead of fresh, and using zest from a clementine and grapefruit juice in place of orange juice and orange zest. I also added in some fresh grated ginger.I don't know if anyone else appreciated it, but I liked it. Today, it has been transformed into filling for enchiladas (with some additions), and I used some cherry barbeque sauce as the base for the enchilada sauce. As I said to J., I may have taken my Culinary Mad Science experiments one step too far, but I guess we'll see.

Incidentally, while we were shopping in preparation for Bollywood Night, I had a new cloth shopping bag that we acquired at Meijer. It's got 6 little mini-compartments, just perfect for wine or other glass jars of things. I had bought 4 bottles of wine for the 10 percent discount at Kroger, and the cashier was admiring my bag. On the way out, I saw another shopper eyeing my bag and saying, "Oooh!" in an admiring way. I enjoy giving other people bag envy- I think it's nifty, too. And it, apparently, was free. The cashier at Meijer saw we'd brought in our own canvas shopping bags and when we were one short, she just gave the bag to us for free. Sweet!
