-I had a lazy, relaxing weekend hotel getaway with my sweetie this Friday night through Sunday noonish. He went to some of the events at the convention. I mostly chilled in the room, read a book ("The Collapsible World," which was excellent), watched bad TV, slept a lot. We had noisy hotel sex, ate rich food, drank a fair amount, and spent some time in the jacuzzi. I also spent a little while in the sauna and went swimming. I had heard that snow was in the forecast, so the blowing snow on Saturday was not a surprise. However, I did not expect it would stick this late in the season. I saw a really pissed-off looking Canada goose standing in the median. You could almost hear him thinking, "I came north for THIS?" The daffodils and tulips looked peeved as well. We had to scrape about 4 inches of snow off the car to drive home on Sunday.

-On Sunday afternoon and well into the evening, had friends over for games, movies, and food. I made a big batch of vegetable soup and put out assorted crackers and cheeses. We also polished off quite a bit of (red) zinfandel.

-We turned off "Rollerball" about half-way through. Even LL Cool J's presence and Rebecca Romijn's boobies couldn't save that movie.

-Today is the start of TV Turn-off Week. This shouldn't be too tough, since (not counting TV shows on DVD, which I love because there are no commercials) I've watched a total of maybe 6-8 hours of TV in the last 6 weeks. I've been seeing some studies and factoids about TV watching lately that make me glad I kicked the boob tube habit. Apparently, watching TV burns less calories than almost any other sedentary activity, including looking at a wall. The people who published that factoid said they thought it might have something to do with the TV lulling you into not even burning calories from mental activity. I also have read some studies that link higher number of TV hours watched with obesity. It doesn't surprise me at all, because not only are you generally pretty sedentary while watching the teevee, but you're constantly bombarded with commercials about fatty, sugary foods you didn't know you needed until now. And people tend to snack mindlessly (which is different than mindFUL snacking) while they're watching TV.

-I have an assignment to write two poems by next Monday. I tend to like more specific assignments, because my mind seems to go blank when the topic and form are too wide open. However, this time, I have a couple ideas that I think I could turn into poems. One is about crushed blossoms from flowering trees on the floor of the Starbucks coffee shop. I'm making a note of it here so it doesn't escape me when I have a chance to sit down and think poetry.
