I thought *I* was the Queen of TMI
Apr. 21st, 2004 07:44 pmI have a tradition of participating in the School-to-Work job shadow program at the local high school. I usually take one student at a time, but this week I had two 11th-graders. They were B, a little punk rock girl with short bleached blond hair and T, a pretty dark-skinned girl with hair braided in funky geometrical figures.
We'd been doing some girl talk, and talked about what was the same and what was different "back in the day" when I was in junior high and high school. We were sitting at the swankiest restaurant in town, which is situated on the water, and I'm eating my pesto pasta with shrimp when T asks me, "Did you have bad periods when you were younger?"
She pulled out some ibuprofen and started throwing them back with her lemonade.
And I tried not to let my jaw drop open because I don't want to make her think that I thought it was gross to talk about her period-- I think young women should be well-informed about reproductive health. I was just taken aback at such a personal question in the middle of restaurant at the busy noon hour.
I had a blast, though. The girls cracked me quite a bit. I usually only take one student at a time, but I think I may ask for 2 at a time in the future, because then they can entertain one another when I have to do some actual work.
