Why write?

I'm trying to think about why I started writing. I've been writing since age 6 at least, when I penned my autobiography, called "Pickle Pass." Why? I don't know-- I was six.
My theory is that my whole family was so brilliant and talented in the arts-- but especially music and drama-- that I needed to both fit in and set myself apart. So, I got heavily involved in the visual arts (I'm the only one in the family who draws and paints, etc., particularly well or often, though my Dad did some amateur cartooning) and excelled at writing. These were "arty" pursuits, but I didn't have to compete with them in the musical arena, since I am decidedly average in my musical talents.
I think, too, it had to do with being the youngest, and having siblings so much older, I ended up entertaining myself a lot. I read a shitload (on average, 1 book a day in grade school and middle school) and also wrote to entertain myself.
