What I've been reading

"Stars in my Pocket Like Grains of Sand" by Samuel R. Delany. I was riveted right away, found some of Delany's literary devices annoying, but ultimately really liked the book. I kind of wish he'd actually written the sequel to it that he'd planned.

and

"The Bingo Palace" by Louise Erdrich. I love her lyrical writing and the way she interweaves a lot of characters' stories. I had a few minor nitpicks about style (for instance, she's writing from the viewpoint of a 20-something young man, and he makes some observations that sound more like a 30-year-old woman's) but I really liked it and want to read more by her.

My full comments on both books here.

Also, I am not officially doing the "50 Books by People of Color" challenge, but knowing about it and reading other people's experience with it has influenced my book selections in a really good way. So far, I've enjoyed all the books that I put on my "to be read" list specifically because of wanting to bring more diversity to my reading list.

I haven't read Stars yet but I'm looking forward to whenever I do. Have you see [livejournal.com profile] papersky's recent review of it on tor.com? http://www.tor.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=blog&id=14575
