"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" by Mark Haddon. The story starts with the main character, Christopher, an autistic teenager, finding the neighbor's dog dead, stabbed with a gardening tool. He initially is accused of killing the dog, so he sets out on an investigation, finding clues and making deductions. I suppose the author is showing off some writerly technique, but the voice of Christopher seems SO real that I bought in immediately and enjoyed the book immensely.

"Stealing Buddha's Dinner," a memoir by Bich Minh Nguyen. Nguyen was from a family of Vietnamese refugees and grew up in Grand Rapids, and tells her story of growing up an outsider in blond, Dutch Reform west Michigan through references to food; each chapter is named after a type of American, Mexican or Vietnamese food. I enjoyed this book a lot - another one I'd heartily recommend.
