What I've been reading

"Kiss Me Like You Love Me" by Ann Arbor author Wednesday Lee Friday ([livejournal.com profile] wednes on LJ). I read her very first novel, "A Stabbing for Sadie," last year, and this is her third novel. Reading the two books so closely together, I can tell she's really grown as an author.  I liked that each chapter was quite short. Rather than making the novel easy to put down, I got hooked because I kept thinking, "I'll just read one more chapter - they're short!"  Despite the grim subject matter -- it's about a serial killer--  it was an easy read and I enjoyed the bits of black humor.

and

"The Buffalo Soldier" by Chris Bohjalian. I've found Bohjalinan's novels to be somewhat uneven (I've read 3 others), so, I wasn't sure what to expect with "Buffalo Soldier," a book by a white male author writing about a white couple fostering and potentially adopting a black boy. It could have gone badly, but I really loved the book, especially the fact that he started each chapter with excerpts from a real Buffalo Soldier's diary.

My full comments on both books here.
