What I've been reading

"The Foreign Student" by Susan Choi. It's the story of a friendship between Chuck, a young man who survived something terrible in Korea during the Korean War and who got a scholarship to study at a small liberal arts college in Tennessee, and Katherine, the daughter of wealthy, upper class parents who is also damaged by something in her past. I thought Choi did a fantastic job of rounding out two very different characters and creating a strong sense of place with her descriptions of the small college where they meet. I want to read more by this author.

and

"V for Vendetta" by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. As per usual, the novel is so much better than the film (though I do like the movie). There are many more interesting side plots and the characters - especially Evey - are more nuanced and less black-and-white than in the movie.

My full comments on both books here.
